After an outstanding nights sleep at Eleanor's place we had an unusual yet delicious chocolate sprinkles on toast for breakfast and having rested off our travel exhaustion we were ready for our first full day in this historical city. First on the agenda was the Anne Frank House which thankfully we had pre-booked for so we were let in straight away. As we wandered round even I was shocked with the truths that she wrote in her diary about how the Nazis had taken over Amsterdam. All three of us were familiar with the Second World War and its happenings but not many English diaries were written about the invasion of their own cities. What shocked us most was the fact that her father said he did not know/recognise his daughter after having read her diary and it was too late to understand her life as she had passed a way just months before the British troops liberated Bergen-Belsen on April 15, 1945. We learned shortly after having been through the museum of Anne Frank which changed the world, that it was a good idea to have gone here first as we sat dispirited in the cafe taking in what we had just read and so to lighten up the mood I took the girls to one of my favourite sandwich deli's Bagels & Beans. Whilst enjoying my scrumptious Mango Chutney Chicken Bagel I could not help but think of the future years in which we can travel around the world freely and learn all about the cultures and people which so unconsciously change the world.
In order to get back to a more up-beat state we began to wander along the endless canals visiting the famous Fault in our Stars bench and many cute shops, however after a while the exhaustion caught back up with us and we headed home for some peace and quiet. We took the apartment to our advantage and got ready to go out for dinner in style which was of course with some old classic tunes on speaker. Our evening meal was at Wagamamas where we much enjoyed the spicy Japanese styled food. Following that we made our way to the Red Light District Bitterzoet to watch Saint Motel - a more uncommon American Funk band. In awe of their energy we very much enjoyed ourselves and danced without thought in the small venue, chatting with some of the people around us. We wanted the thrill of this concert to stay with us a bit longer so we took our time to wander back to the apartment.
It has been an emotionally filled day and we are very tired so time for bed!
